You have few options depends on your budget.
First of you need to get to Cusco. It cost you $33 by bus, or $150 for flight. All prices are correct for March of 2016.
1. You can take tour from Cusco ($100), but the last hour a bus goes on unsealed road, the total duration of the bus ride will be 6-9 hours.
2. You can take colectivo taxi (minibus) to the town where the end of the road and walk the rest for 2-3 hours.
3. The most comfortable option in my opinion is simply to take a train. You can take directly from from Cusco, or you can take a collectivo bus to the next town (1,5h and $3) and take train from there, This $3 can save you a lot on the train ticket. If you take the train from Cusco it will $130-200 (3 hours), or $80-160 from the next town (1,5 h).
When you get to the town which located right near to the mountain where the MachuPicchu you transport journey may continue. You have 2 options to get up to the mountain:
1. Hike (8 km)
2. Take a bus. 20 minutes, $25.
So our expenses for 2 persons: a bus LIma-Cusco ($66), microbus to the second train station ($5), train ($160), bus up to the mountain ($50), tickets ($100).
Don't forget to take your passport, you will be ask for it multiple times. Each time when you buy tickets and enter. A driver of collectivo bus was the only person who hasn't asked for it :)
