Australian and the US standards about infant car seats require a base to permanently fit in a car and a portable capsule. The base is optional in the US. The standards about strapping of a capsule in the two countries are still different.
How to fit an Australian capsule you can find here. It's maxi-cosi manual.
European standards are not that difficult as Australian one. No base, no extra belts.
But what I what to talk about is design of car seats.
Let's compare design in the US, Australia and Europe by one big company as Maxi-Cosi. They are big company and have their car seats distribution in all of these countries.
Europe designs collection 2013 from Maxi-Cosi. Car seats are suitable till 12 months.
American designs collection 2013 from Maxi-Cosi. Car seats are suitable till 12 months.
Australian designs collection 2013 from Maxi-Cosi. Car seats are suitable till 6 months.
I used Maxi-Cosi as a good example what the Australian baby market is. It doesn't mean other companies have huge design collection in any other colors, actually other companies totally ignore Australian customers. I don't blame these companies, I have a great discussion with some big car seat companies members who have work experience in Europe, they said, when they try to increase design collection people ask for these products in black color... So having a stylish car seat is just not popular in Australia. But what should people who still want the products which can't be offered in Australia do? Usually we just buy what we want through Internet. But it's law in this case, all car seats should be met by Australian standards. A lot of times this theme was on media, and Australia has begun to think of iso-fix as Europe uses for ages. There no huge difference between safety of these two systems, but Australian one is really difficult to fit and 70% of parents do it wrong. The problem of bringing iso-fix to Australia is local cars. They are absolutely not ready for it as all Australian made cars doesn't have iso-fix feature, it's about half of Aus car market! By the way Australian made cars for export have it.
As the end of this post let's compare the maxi-cosi car seat for AU market on a top image and an image below.
Price for the top one is from $300, the below one is from $150. The first one is suitable till 6 months, the second one is till 12 months.
As I bought a European travel system (Australia has the same pram market as car seats one, but fortunately there are no law to order it from another country) the travel system could be combined only with EU car seat.
